location: Prague status: Competition   in collaboration with Hana Hučíková Tullio Polisi, Karolina Hahn, Beatriz García Lapaz   No House should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.  Frank Lloyd Wright We present the New Congress Center Prague – the new addition that embodies the natural and long awaited evolution of the cultural landmark and that utilizes to the fullest its unique location in the center of Prague. Understanding its role in our culture, historical context and architectural qualities, we carefully add a new component. One that does not compete with the existing but rather complements it, enhances its value and offers new spaces as well as more efficient, comfortable and logical interconnections. One that creates a new public space. One that attracts a new crowd and facilitates interactions. We raise the public platform on the South by one level, forming a solid base for the existing building, the valuable monument of its era. At the same time, a new lively public plaza emerges, superior to the vehicular level and with new pace and amazing views – new horizon. […]

New view of the wine country, its stunning landscape, rolling hills, landmarks and above all, its endless wine yards. There must be a tower, the predominant desire to create a mark of human presence keeps asking for it. There it is, in proportions of our masters and at the tip of the elevated peninsula ridge.

location: Horni Jiretin status: Built project We have designed this house for a young family on a rather exceptional site where the North tip of the City of Horni Jiretin blends with the foothills of extraordinary mountain ridge that creates a natural barrier between two countries – Czech and German. Dense forests frame the site from three sides and only the South edge opens towards the Bohemian plateau. It offers stunning views of the Czech Highlands with its distinguished volcanic peaks and recently renovated landscape that reminds one of the brown coalfields still rich and active in the adjacent locations. In these unusual circumstances we are creating a solid form independent and sovereign of its surroundings.

location: New York, NY status: Built project A flexible space in the heart of New York’s most prominent borough. Grand and capable. Revolutionary in potential, simple in appearance, achieved by modest means. Form that follows more than its function. A lot more. At first, it is a comforting garden-like atmosphere that blurs the limits between inside and outside. In minutes it easily transforms into a full-size gathering space, meeting point, formal dinner place, gallery to introduce new artists.

Finalist Architect Award 2009 Location: Olomouc Status: Built Project The 78m2 apartment is located in a newly developed residential area in an immediate proximity of the Olomouc city center in the Czech Republic. The original plan was fragmented into several small rooms and did not suit the clients’ idea of continuous space capable of flexible adjustments. The decision to re-think the plan was made prior the construction, which allowed for more freedom and ultimately lead to a radical alternative. The proposal only preserves exterior walls, entrance door, windows and a structural column in the center of the layout. The new solution creates a dwelling for two young professionals with plenty of open loft-like space yet capable of easy partition. Two boxes containing bathroom, closet, a powder room and kitchen with a dining table are anchored in the free-floating space. The position of these containers is designed so that a public and a private part of the apartment are clearly and naturally articulated. Movable wall and doors hidden in wall pockets enablefurther separation or a complete enclosure of the bedroom and the study on the west side. As a result, the apartment, perceived as an unpartitioned loft, is flexibly adjustable to […]

location: Minice, Czech Republic status: Under Construction Two volumes, two roles. Kahnian organization of spaces with feather-light Miesian pavilion. Site Situated on a gently sloping hill with a brook at the bottom and charming view of the township in the nearby valley. Learning from the great masters we have established a solid platform – a plane of Farnsworth House or De Blas House – a foundation for the house, a solid base for everyday life. The space for living is very simple pavilion – hollow core planks create flat roof supported by concrete columns. Precast system allows for large span, low-e coated insulated glass for comfortable and sustainable life full of light. Canopy extends outside to protect from rain and sun. The house opens up towards southern warmth and picturesque views of the vernacular. Section What is hinted on the outside, clearly unveils on the inside – a simple composition of two volumes allowing for exceptional light conditions – Warm Southern Sun  and soft Northern light – and programmatic interrelations – while all services are contained in a smaller solid volume, the main space is rather simple and open. Plan: 4+1 The plan, simple and efficient, works on one level […]

location: Second Avenue Subway New York City status: Competition 2010 Museum Line is an exploration of promising opportunity generated by the fusion of two prominent New York’s phenomena: Museum of Art and Subway Line. The idea of cross-programming the busiest public transportation system in the United States with experiencing art as-you go unveils possible benefits for both sides. Achieving an equal balance between quality of museum experience and subway culture is one of the crucial aspects of the project. Based on the factual project of new line for the City of New York along the Second Avenue, the proposal conforms to all existing constraints of the site. The number of tracks, shape and dimensions of the tunnel and surface traffic as well as light studies of the underground spaces have been factored into the design. In addition, the proposal creates unique linear park on the surface along the line. Project is based in New York City utilizing all three stations of the already-started first phase of the proposed Second Avenue Subway. The Museum Line Train oscillates between 72nd Street Station and 96th Street Station. 86th Street Station in the center is developed as a central hub. Its unique semicircular tunnel construction […]

Water Palace

location: Lower East Side, New York status: Competition Water Palace maintains the existing social interactions and offers new unexpected encounters. It is an assemblage of autonomous elements composed as one continuous journey. The order of the narrative is, however, a choice of the users who construct their own personal story. Conceived as a catalog of spatial experiences, the individual components are designed separately before constituting the whole. The geometry is inspired by the documented existing morphology found in the neighborhood. The project goal is to support the existing social encounters and to introduce new events to enhance the unique atmosphere of Alphabet City. WP is a multi-purpose building in Alphabet City, a neighborhood located in the Lower East Side of New York City. It promotes cultural, educational and physical activities in the City. The assemblage consists of wide range of spatial experiences and offers swimming pools, warm baths, hot baths, wet and dry sauna, a skating rink, an oyster bar, a sky deck restaurant, an outdoor cafe and most importantly, a multi-level public park, an extension of an existing community garden with a festival theater. Objects, shapes, buildings and structures documented in a Catalogue of Found Components demonstrate the overwhelming […]

Pier Museum Miami

1st Prize Architect Award 2009 Location: Miami, FL HORIZON: The view of the ocean is the most pertinent exhibit of the Museum. It is a manifest of men trying to find a solid point in the endless see, better future in the new country. Most exposition spaces and noise are therefore located further inland whereas the spaces close to the ocean are dedicated to quiet contemplation and perception of the nature. Preserving the line of the endless sea horizon is one of the fundamental aspects of the design. Top of the building is set at the height of Fifth street and no objects obstruct the view. The Museum appears as a platform for watching the Sun, the Sky, the Waves, the Boats and the remote homeland. MOVEMENT: A directional sign located on the platform denotes the steady stream of refugees who began making the dangerous passage to Florida in a myriad of small boats and craft. Intentionally placed at the beginning of the pier, the arrow is the first and only symbol presenting the museum on surface. It is an intriguing and appealing component provoking curiosity, eventually leading to continuation against the prescribed direction to the horizon view and the Museum entrance. […]

Fulnek Nursery

location: Northern Moravia, Czech Republic status: Competition finalist in collaboration with Hana Hucikova   4×4 in child care in Fulnek and beyond Our school is new, simple, efficient, spacious, well-lit, functional. At the same time the material and formal concept reflect modesty and consciousness of the existing, beyond-regional architectural gems of the Silesian township. History as inspiration Textile manufacturing has had a long and famous history in this regional center and international trade intersection. We want to remind ourselves of this tradition, emphasize and celebrate it. It is connected with prime prosperity of the area. In a town devastated by heavy artillery at the end of WW II and then again later by insensitive urban planning of the communist era, looking back towards the rich and inspirational history is undoubtedly justified. Beautiful forms of the loom, functional and flexible structure, the regularity of the warp strings, stationery and movable parts, orthognal geometry.. all these qualities emerge in our proposal for the Nursery. The building is like a loom, its form is derived from its function, its scale corresponds to its program and project brief, no more no less.   Location – 4 way connection We place this building carefully in the Northeastern […]

ZUSU Art School

1. Magnificent urban park 2.Significant art residence 3. Young artists Three crucial elements that define the contemporary arts institution. The school is open to the park, complements the existing building with appropriate form and scale and offers endless flexibility for the present and future needs of the performers, artists, their professors and audience. We present a new arts center that prepares talented individuals for their future careers. 1. Play in the garden We see the immediate presence of the park as a challenging opportunity for a joyful connection between inside and outside, the school and the visitor, the performing and the visiting, the planned and the accidental. We place the building, choose its materials and layout based on careful study and thorough understanding the park complexity. 2. Existing residence We carefuly preserve the appearance of the existing facility as a symbol of the institution giving it a historically rooted identity. Formerly residential typology has limited ability to fully respond to the fundamental needs of the new arts center. While some of the demanding program needs are relocated to the new building, the existing remains a recognizable gateway with smaller classrooms and supporting spaces. The present a new building with striking […]

235: São Paulo

location: São Paulo status: Competition 2010 235 focuses on the creation of relationships between infrastructural flows and architectural space that generates various connections resulting in an opportunity to create public spaces on the leftover sites. The proposed program, as well as the car, bus and pedestrian flows, blend public and private space and create a fluid urban massing of overlapping parks, retail, residential areas and new public transportation station with central check-in for two major Brazilian airports. The urban travel in Sao Paulo is by more than one third exclusively pedestrian, additionally, almost 30 percent of the inhabitants use public transportation such as bus or metro. Only 13.6 percent employ car as a mode of transportation to get around the metropolis. It is important to understand, however, that this is not a deliberate green decision of the residents but rather a result of the fact that the car in Brazil is not yet affordable. The potential threat can be seen on already clogged traffic arteries during rush hours. A platform that stretches along Vinte e Tres de Maio, in the height same as the city around it, is a seam that re-connects the cut up urban fabric. It runs above the existing […]
